If you are looking for a sports matching game, then you’ve come to the right spot. This fun memory game is the perfect activity for your little one!

sports matching game

I love matching games. I think they are such a great card game for young kids because it helps with their memory, ability to focus, and paying attention to detail.

All three of my kiddos have gone through a stage as preschoolers where they were obsessed with matching games. Even to this day, they still will pull out a matching game here and there to prove their memory is better than mine.

In the past, I have created matching games such as this dinosaur one, a Harry Potter one, this ice cream one and SO many more (you can find them all here).

Another one I decided to create is a sports matching game. This memory game has various sports balls and equipment such as a basketball, bowling ball, football, whistle and more.

Whether you are a teacher looking for a sports themed game to play or the parent of a preschool-aged child, you’ll want to check out this sports matching game printable.

This post is all about a sports matching game printable.

Supplies

  • Sports Matching Game Printable
  • Cardstock
  • Printer
  • Scissors
  • Laminator
  • Laminating Sheets

Directions

First, you’ll need to print off the sports matching game at the bottom of the post using cardstock like this. Using cardstock is important because it is thick and will make it so the image does not show through.

If you don’t have any cardstock like this, you could try taping multiple sheets of paper together after you’ve printed so that you can’t see through the cards.

After printing the game, you can laminate the sports memory game cards. This will allow you to reuse them in the future by preventing them from getting crumpled or ripped.

In order to laminate, you will need to place the sports memory game printable (before cutting) into a laminating sheet like this. Then, slide the laminating sheet through a laminator. Once the printable is laminated, you can cut out each memory card.

How To Play

To play this sports matching game, you’ll need to flip over all of the cards so you cannot see the pictures. Then, mix them all up.

Next, arrange the cards into a grid so that there are 4 rows of 6 or 6 rows of 4.

Let the youngest player go first and continue the game clockwise. The player going first will choose two cards and flip them over. If the cards match, then that player gets to keep the pair and go again.

If the sports cards do not match, then they flip the cards back over, and it becomes the next player’s turn. The game continues until all of the cards have been matched up. Whoever has the most matches at the end of the game wins!
