If you’re looking for Christmas Scattergories, then you’ve come to the right spot! This Christmas categories game is a fun way to entertain family and friends at your holiday gatherings.

The holiday season is quickly approaching, which means Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here before we know it. If you are anything like me, you are already planning your Thanksgiving menu, Christmas party ideas, and new holiday games and activities to play with your kids.
If you’ve seen any of my other posts you are probably aware that I love creating new holiday themed games such as Christmas charades, Christmas scavenger hunt clues (your kids will love these), Christmas bingo, and more. This year, to add to the holiday fun, I have created and am sharing with you a Christmas Scattergories game.
This Christmas categories game is very similar to the Scattergories board game; the only difference is that this printable game is completely holiday themed.
If you’ve never played Scattergories before, it is a fun word game that can be enjoyed with a group of people, making it an excellent choice for your holiday gatherings. The object of the game is to come up with unique answers to a set of categories, all starting with the same letter.
These Christmas scattergories range from “Gifts that don’t fit under the Christmas tree” and “Gifts you’d find in a stocking” to “Things you’d find in Santa’s workshop”, “Words that describe the Grinch” and more.
Whether you’re planning a Christmas party or holiday gathering or just looking for a new game to play with your kids, this Christmas Scattergories is the perfect option!

Christmas Categories Scattergories
This Christmas game is very similar to the regular Scattergories board game. The main difference is that each Christmas Scattergories list is centered around Christmas. Also, the letters are predetermined using Christmas words such as “elf,” “gifts,” “sleigh,” and more.

Directions for the Printable Scattergories Game
The first thing you will need to do is print off the Christmas Scattergories printable at the bottom of this post. This printable includes 19 different Christmas word game cards, 6 Christmas scattergories lists, and a score card for tallying points.

I highly recommend printing the Christmas Scattergories lists on cardstock like this or laminating them so they hold up better and can be used again in the future.
Cardstock
Decide which Christmas word(s) you want to use. There are three, four, five, and six-letter words to choose from.
- 3 Letter Words: Elf, Joy, Toy, Bow
- 4 Letter Words: Snow, Xmas, Noel, Star

- 5 Letter Words: Santa, Angel, Candy, Bough, Claus, Gifts
- 6 Letter Words: Advent, Lights, Wreath, Tinsel, Sleigh

Each letter is a new round, which means the six-letter word cards make for a longer game. Print off a copy of the game sheet of your choosing for each player. Next, print off a copy of all six Christmas Scattergories lists for each player and cut them out.
If you don’t want to use the predetermined letter cards, you can print off the blank card included in the printable. Then, either use a letter dice or the printable alphabet letters. Before each round, roll the dice or draw a letter out of a bowl to determine the letter for that round.

You’ll also find a scorecard in the printable, so make sure to print it off because this will come in handy for keeping score.

How To Play Christmas Scattergories
Choose a Christmas Scattergories game card and hand one out to each player. Then, choose a list to play with. Ensure each player has the same list and that it is placed on the left side of their playing card.

Next, set a timer for three minutes. Each player will write down a word that starts with that round’s letter that matches the category theme. For example, if the round letter is “S” and the first category says “gingerbread house supplies,” you could write Sprinkles, Skittles, Smarties, or Spice Drops.

Then, you would move on to the next category. Continue down the column thinking of words that match the categories that start with an S.
When the time is up, everyone goes around and shares their answers for each Christmas category. If nobody has the same answer as you, then you will receive one point for that category.
Add everyone’s points to the scorecard. Next, move on to the second letter. You can either choose to use the same list with the new letter or change the list.
