Fall is quickly approaching, which means Halloween will be here before we know it. If you are anything like me, you are already looking for Halloween costume ideas, Halloween party planning, and new Halloween games and activities to play with your kids.
If you’ve seen any of my other posts, you may know that I love making holiday-themed games such as Halloween Bingo, Halloween Charades, and my kids’ absolute favorite Halloween scavenger hunt clues. This year, I have created and am sharing with you a printable Halloween Scattergories game.
If you enjoy the regular Scattergories, then you will surely love this Halloween version. If you’ve never played Scattergories, it is a fun word game that can be enjoyed with a group of people, making it a great addition to a Halloween party.
The object of the game is to come up with unique answers to a set of categories, all starting with the same letter. These Halloween Scattergories range from “Things That Are Orange” and “Things You’re Scared Of” to “Family Costume Themes,” “Halloween Decorations That You Hang,” and more!

About the Halloween Themed Scattergories
This Halloween game is very similar to the regular Scattergories board game. The only main difference is that these lists are all centered around Halloween. Also, the letters are predetermined using fun Halloween words such as “scary,” “bat,” “orange,” and more.
If you’d rather use the letter dice from the Scattergories game, I included a blank template for you to fill in the letter that gets rolled. I also have a printable with all of the letters if you do not have the letter dice and instead want to draw letters for each round.
Supplies for the Halloween Themed Scattergories
- Printer
- Cardstock and Regular 8.5×11 Printer Paper
- Halloween Scattergories Printable
- Scissors
- Timer
- Writing Utensils
- Optional – Letter Dice
Directions for the Printable Scattergories Game
First, you will need to print off the Scattergories printable at the bottom of this post. I highly recommend printing the Halloween Scattergories lists on cardstock like this or laminating them so they hold up better and can be used again in the future.
Decide which Halloween word(s) you want to use. There are three, four, five, and six-letter words to choose from.
- 3 Letter Words: Bat, Cat, Web, Owl
- 4 Letter Words: Mask, Howl, Dark, Fear
- 5 Letter Words: Scary, Trick, Candy, Ghost, Grave, Witch
- 6 Letter Words: Scream, Spider, Goblin, Orange, Zombie
Each letter will be a new round, so the six-letter words will make for a longer game. Print off a copy of the game sheet of your choosing for each player. Next, print off a copy of all 9 lists for each player and cut them out.
If you don’t want to use the predetermined letters, you can print off the blank card. Then, either use a letter dice or the alphabet letters printable. Before each round, roll the dice or draw a letter out of a bowl to determine the letter for that round.
You’ll also find a scorecard in the printable so make sure to print it off because this will come in handy for keeping score.
How To Play Halloween Scattergories
Choose a Halloween Scattergories card and hand one out to each player. Then, choose a list to play with. Make sure each player has the same list and has it placed on the left side of their playing card.
Next, set a timer for 3 minutes. Each player will write down a word that starts with that round’s letter that matches the category theme. For example, if the round letter is “C” and the first category says “things that are orange” you could write carrot, cantaloupe, cheese, or clementine.
Then, you would move on to the next category. Continue down the column thinking of words that match the categories that start with a C.
When the time is up, everyone goes around and shares their answers for each category. If nobody has the same answer as you, then you will receive one point for that category.
Add everyone’s points to the scorecard. Next, move on to the second letter. You can either choose to use the same list with the new letter or change the list.
