A first day of school interview is a great tradition to start with your kids. It is so easy to do and will be a great keepsake to look back on in years to come.
Kids really do grow way too fast. As a mom of three, I love doing things that will preserve these precious years while they last.
This is why I created and am sharing with you this first day of school interview. On this interview your kids will write down a memory from their summer, something they look forward to this year, what they want to be when they grow up and more!
When they are finished, attach a photo and store it with their other keepsakes to look back on in years to come!

Supplies
- Printer
- 8.5 x11 Printer Paper
- Writing Utensil
- First Day of School Photo (Wallet Size)
- Laminator and Laminating Pouches or Page Protectors and 3 Ring Binder
Directions
You will first need to choose which first day of school interview printable to use. I have created a black and white version, a rainbow version and a pastel rainbow version that you can download below. Then, print off the printable.
I highly recommend printing one off for each year your child has left of school. If your child is starting kindergarten then print all 13 off so you have all the copies for each year to come. Store the remaining copies in a safe place for future use.
If you don’t want to print all the copies now, you could also just pin this post for future use.
Next, either ask your child these interview questions or have them fill this first day of school interview out. Don’t forget to have them add their signature at the bottom. It will be cool to see how much their penmanship improves over the years.
Now, take a photo of your child on their first day of school. Print off the picture and place it in the outlined box on the printable. The box dimensions are 2.5 in x 3.5 in so wallet size fits great.
Then, glue or tape the photo down into the designated picture box. If you plan to laminate this printable then this step is not necessary.
Laminating
Next, I highly recommend laminating this keepsake. It will better preserve it for years to come. If you don’t have a laminator, I recommend getting one because they are so handy to have.
I use mine all the time for keepsakes like this, preserving artwork my kids make, and protecting printables like scavenger hunts so I can reuse them in the future and not have to reprint.
The laminator I have is this Amazon Basics 12 inch. I’ve had it now for 5 years and it still works great!
To go with the laminator you will need laminating pouches. I have used both the Amazon laminating sheets and the Scotch laminating pouches and have not noticed a difference between the two so I just go with whichever one is cheaper when I need to buy them.

Laminating Sheets
Now, open up a laminating pouch and place the first day of school printable in it. Make sure the photo is placed directly in the center of the photo box. Then, close the pouch and slide it through the laminator.
When it comes out, store it with the other keepsake items you have of your child.
3 Ring Binder
Another great way to store these first day of school interviews is in a 3 ring bider like this. Just place the printable in a page protector and store them in order in the binder.
You will be so thankful you have this one day to bring you back down memory lane.
