Are you looking to strengthen your relationship with your child by starting a Mother Daughter Journal? This simple, back and forth journal is a great way to open lines of communication.
Certain face to face conversations can feel intimidating and difficult for our kids. This can lead them to hold things in rather than opening up and talking about them.
As a mom to three daughters, I have started a Mother Daughter journal to create a safe space for my children to open up to me. This gives them another line of communication to turn to when they may feel too uncomfortable talking face to face.
In this post you will learn what you need to start this mother daughter journal, when to start, and prompts to get you started. Afterwards, you will feel confident in starting a journal with your daughter that will ultimately strengthen your relationship.
This post is all about how to start a mother daughter journal.

What Kind of Journal
You have so many options when it comes to choosing a journal. We use these Paperage Journals from Amazon that you can get in a bunch of different colors. This is nice if you have more than one daughter so that each can have a different color. I really like that this journal has a bookmark as well as an elastic closing band you can hook a pen onto.
Lined Journal Notebook
Paper Mate Flair Pens
Etsy also has some nice Mother Daughter journals. I’ve been eying this one up for when my daughters and I fill up our current journals.
Honestly though, your journal does not have to be anything fancy. It could be a notebook or three ring binder that you already have at home. Just write your guys’ names on it and voila you’re ready to go!
When to start?
In my opinion, the best time to start is when your child starts Kindergarten. I started at this time because it was when my kids were going to be spending more time away from me. I wanted them to have another way to tell me things in case something happened at school that they didn’t feel comfortable telling me face to face.
Kindergarten is also when many kids begin to read and write so they will be able to read your letters and write back to you. Even if your child doesn’t know how to read or write you can still start this journal. Right now, one of my daughters and I mostly do games and doodle back and forth to one another.
While it may be easier to start this journal when your child is younger and the conversations are lighter, it is never too late to start so if you have a teen already do not pass on starting this journal. You both will be thankful you did.
How to Start A Mother Daughter Journal
Now that you have picked out a journal and are ready to start, tell your child about the journal. Establish a place where you want your child to put it when they are done and have your child tell you where they want you to put the Mother Daughter Journal when you are done.
Rules of the Mother Daughter Journal
With my daughter’s journals we only have one “rule”. That rule is that I would not bring up in face to face conversation what we talk about in our journal unless SHE brings it up. I’m hoping this rule will make her feel more comfortable opening up and talking about hard conversations when they need to be had.
If you choose to use this “rule” you could print it off and tape it to the inside cover of the journal as a reminder to both of you.
Mother Daughter Journal Prompts
When it comes to what you should write and talk about there are no rules. My only recommendation is to not ask pressured questions right off the bat. Try to make this journal light and fun so you can form a connection with your daughter.
