Learning letters is an important skill for younger kids. It is the crucial component of learning how to read. As a stay-at-home mom, I have really tried hard to teach my kids their letter sounds and letters so they were well prepared for Kindergarten.

Having done preschool at home with all three of my kids, I have created many different learning resources over the years. One of those resources is these alphabet flashcards printable.

You will find this printable has very simplistic flashcards. It does not have pictures to distract. They are just simply the letter. You will also find that all of the consonants are red and the vowels are blue.

In this post, you will get your free alphabet flashcards printable and learn different ways to use them with your toddler or preschooler. This is a great resource for teachers or parents wanting to help their children learn their letters.

This post is all about an alphabet flashcards printable.

This helps the cards hold up so they can be used over and over. I also highly recommend printing on cardstock.

Cardstock is much thicker paper, so you can’t see through it, which is important if you plan to play any of the alphabet game ideas. As you can see in the picture below, the alphabet flashcards printable is very easy to see through using regular printer paper.

Next, cut out the alphabet flashcards with either scissors or a papercutter like this.

How to Use Them

There are so many different ways you can use these alphabet flashcards. Below I have listed out a few different options for teaching the letters.

1 . Teaching One Letter A Day

The way I have taught my kiddos their letters is by introducing only one new letter every day or every couple days depending on how well they are remembering the letters.

I also didn’t teach the letters in alphabetical order but rather in order of common use. The order letter that I introduced them in is as follows: c, m, a, t, s, r, i, p, b, f, o, g, h, j, u, l, d, w, e, n, k, q, v, x, y, z

On day one, I would show my child the uppercase and lowercase alphabet flashcard for letter C. I would tell them what sound it makes and also the name of the letter. I would then have them try to think of words that start with that sound.

If that is too difficult, then try placing three items in front of them and ask which of the items starts with that sound. This helps them recognize letter sounds in the words they hear.

The next day, before introducing a new letter I would pull out the flashcard for letter C and ask them if they remember what the name and sound it makes is. If they remember I would introduce a new letter.

If not, I would continue practicing this letter. I found it super important to quiz them on ALL the previous letters because then you know when they need more practice and when they are ready for more.

Although this method seems like it would take a lot longer to learn the alphabet, I have found it to be much more helpful in the long run because it really solidifies their phonics, which is SO important for reading.

2. Matching Card Game

Once your child has learned the letters it is fun to play games with these alphabet flashcards. If you plan to play any of these card games with your child you will want to ensure that you print the cards on cardstock.

Shuffle the letters. Give each person 3 cards and have them flipped over to reveal what letter it is. Make sure there are no matches to start the game. If there is a match, just put one of the letters in the middle of the deck and flip a different one.

To start, have your child draw a card from the pile and if they have the match, they put it off to the side. If you have the other match facing up, then you have to give it to them.

If no one has the match, they place it facing up on their side. Then it would be your turn, and you would do the same. Keep playing until all the cards have been used. Whoever has the most matches at the end wins.

While you are playing, make sure to talk through which letter is flipped and it can even help to say the sound that letter makes.

3. Memory Game

Another fun way to help kids learn their letters is by playing alphabet memory or matching. Print off a copy of the uppercase and lowercase letters.

Flip all of the alphabet flashcards over and arrange them into a grid. Each player takes turns drawing two cards. If they are a match, they get to keep it and go again. If they are not a match, they flip them back over.

After all of the cards have been flipped, whichever player has the most matches wins the game.

4. Go Fish

If your child likes playing the game Go Fish, then try playing it with these ABC flashcards. Deal out 6 cards to each player and put the remaining pile in the middle. Then, both players will set down any matches they have in their hand.

Player 1 will choose a card in their hand and ask the other player if they have the match for it. If the other player has that specific card in their hand, they must give it to them.

If they do not have that card in their hand, they will say Go Fish and the first player will need to draw a card from the middle. Then, it will be the next player’s turn. Keep playing until all of the cards are gone. Whoever has the most matches wins the game.

You can play this with one set of uppercase and one set of lowercase, or print off two copies of either the uppercase or lowercase letters.

How to Store Them

When I am not using these alphabet flashcards, I like to store them in these 4×6 Iris Storage Boxes. I love that they are clear so I can see which flashcards are inside.

They also come in a carrying tote that you can slide each storage box into. This is super convenient if you have a lot of different flashcard sets or learning materials that you want to keep together.
