The license plate game is a classic for long car rides. Growing up (before all of this handheld technology) this game used to be one of my favorite ways to pass the time in the car.
Now as an adult, I play this game with my kids whenever we take a family road trip. Not only is this a fun screen-free activity for them but it also helps them recognize and learn their states.
In this post, you’ll learn all about the license plate game and how to play it. You’ll also get two free printables to help you play.

Supplies
- Printer
- Printer Paper 8.5×11
- Printable License Plate Game
- Colored Pencils
- Clipboard
Directions
First, download the printable license plate game at the bottom of this post. There, you will find two different versions of this game. The first printable has a picture of each state with a checkbox whereas the second printable is a coloring map of the United States.
Pick which printable license plate game you want for your kids. Then, print off a copy. Make sure you print one off for each of your children to have their own.
If you are taking a long road trip, then I recommend making at least TWO copies. One copy for the drive to your destination and one copy for the road trip home.
Next, make sure you have writing utensils for each of your kiddos. I like to pack a slider Ziploc baggie full of colored pencils for each child.
You’ll also want a clipboard like this or something else hard that your child can write against.
Lastly, pack the printable license plate game and you are all set to go!
How to Play the License Plate Game
This game is super simple. As you travel, be on the lookout for different state license plates. As vehicles pass by call out which state the license plate is. Then, check off that state on the printable or color it in. See if you can find all 50 states before you reach your destination.
