I highly recommend laminating these charades cards so you can bring them out to play each Thanksgiving.

Before cutting the cards out it can be helpful to place the printables into  laminating sheets and run them through a laminator like this.

You can also laminate the score card and use a wet-erase marker to tally points. Otherwise, just reprint the score card each year.

How to Play Thanksgiving Charades

  1. Split up into two teams making it as fair as possible.
  2. Decide how the winner will be determined prior to starting. Will you play until all of the charades cards are gone? Will you play X amount of rounds or will you go until everyone has had a chance to be the actor?
  3. Separate the cards based on their color, placing the cards face down (there should be three piles). Each pile is worth a different amount of points.
  4. Flip a coin and see which team goes first. This is Team 1.
  5. Team 1 will choose a player to act first. This player will draw a card from a pile of their choosing. The higher the point card the more challenging the word or phrase will be.
  6. Set a timer for 1 minute. Once the timer starts, the player can begin acting out what is on the card using only body gestures and motions. No vocal sounds are allowed.
  7. If Team 1 guesses the card correctly before the timer runs out, then they receive the point(s) for the card and the round is over. If they do not correctly guess the card before the timer runs out then Team 2 is allowed one guess to steal the points. Write down the points using the score card
  8. Now, Team 2 will choose an actor and repeat this process.
  9. Play until a winner has been determined (the way you established BEFORE starting).

After Playing Charades

thanksgiving charades words

After your family finishes playing this fun Thanksgiving Charades game have everyone fill out the blank charades included in this printable. This way, there will be new cards added to the mix when you play next year.

Tips

  • When acting out a phrase, hold up your fingers to indicate how many words are in the phrase. For example, if you draw “spilling the gravy,” you would hold up 3 fingers to let your teammates know you have a three word card. Then, hold up one finger to start acting out the word “spilling”. After your teammates guess the word “spilling” then hold up two fingers and act out “the”. Lastly, hold up three fingers and act out the word “gravy.”
  • When a player guesses correctly touch your nose and then point at that player who answered correctly.
  • If you are playing with young children you may want to consider allowing them to use sounds until they can get the hang of the game.
