Supplies
- Printer
- Printer Paper (8.5×11)
- Scissors
- Free Printable Halloween charades game
- Bowl
Directions
- Download and print off the charades cards below.
- Cut out each individual card and fold them in half.
- Place the cards in a bowl and start your game.
How to Play Charades
- Form a list of words that you can act out (or download my free Halloween charades printable below). Write these words on a piece of paper, fold them up and place them into a bowl.
- Break up into two teams (try to make it as fair as possible).
- Prior to playing, make sure to decide how the winner will be determined. Will you play for X amount of rounds or will the winner be the team who gets X amount of cards correctly first? Trust me, if your family is at all competitive you’ll definitely want to decide this BEFORE the game starts.
- Flip a coin and see which team will start.
- The starting team will have one player draw a card out of the bowl.
- Set a timer for 3 minutes. When the timer starts, the player begins to act out their word or phrase using body gestures and motions for their teammates to guess. No vocal sounds are allowed.
- If their team can guess the card correctly before the timer runs out then the round is over and that team gets a point. If the timer runs out before the team can correctly guess the card, the round is over but the team does not get a point. The other team is then allowed one guess to try and steal the point.
- Play until a winner has been determined (however you established BEFORE starting).
Tips
- If you are acting out a phrase, hold up your fingers to indicate how many words are in the phrase. For example, if you draw “bobbing for apples,” you would hold up 3 fingers to let your teammates know you have a three word card. Then, hold up one finger to start acting out the word “bobbing”. After your teammates guess the word “bobbing” then hold up two fingers and act out “for”. Lastly, hold up three fingers and act out the word “apples.”
- When a player guesses a word correctly touch your nose and then point at the player who answered correctly.
- If you are playing with young children you might want to consider allowing them to use sounds until they can get the hang of the game.
- When using the picture charades, the answer will be whatever the child thinks the picture is. For example, there is a picture of a jack-o-lantern however, if the child acting out the picture thinks of it as a pumpkin then the answer is pumpkin.

Picture Halloween Charades
If you have young children you may know that there can be a reading barrier when it comes to charades. One option is to have a player team up with the younger child to read the card to them so they can act it out.
Otherwise, you can use picture charades. I have created 10 Halloween picture charade cards perfect for non-readers to participate on their own. You can download and print these off below.
